Andrew Whettam has a keen interested in landscapes, cityscapes and minimalistic photography. It was his love of the mountains and a desire to capture and share that wild beauty that attracted him to photography in the first place. Based in North West England and a keen traveller, Andrew has been fortunate to be able to practice his passion in a wide variety of places across the UK and abroad. He is a holder of the LRPS award (Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society).
I am lucky to live on the edge of the Peak District and a couple of hours drive away from Snowdonia, the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. My favourite location is probably the North West Highlands of Scotland and I like to get up there as often as I can.
Andrew started off his journey in photography by going into a shop to buy a point-and-shoot camera and emerging with a fully manual camera with no automatic features at all – an Olympus OM1, which was his weapon of choice for many years. This turned out to be a great decision, because it taught him the basics of how a camera works and turned him into a student of light. He took the plunge into digital photography in 2016 and hasn’t looked back since.
The keys to good photography are great subject matter, great composition and great light. I’m a firm believer in striving constantly to improve and get better at what I do. For me, photography is about experiencing a place and sharing something of the emotion of that.
Andrew has been using Nisi filters since 2016. To control the range of light and length of exposure he uses a variety of graduated and neutral density filters together with the Nisi V5 holder.
Nisi filters give me the ability to capture the image I’m after in camera. I enjoy the calm serenity of long exposures and these filters are the perfect tool for that. I love the quality of the glass and the cast-free images I get with these filters.
Andrew is to be found wandering around mountains and coasts looking for interesting subjects and unique vantage points. You may come across him camped on a remote mountain top looking for that killer sunrise shot. He has been known to give talks on various aspects of photography and post-processing.
